HEARTBREAK VELOCITY
Does the language with which you say "I love you" change the way you love? Can heartbreak really kill you? Is that death, or is it Marvin Gaye? Can you teach me how to kiss? Cake, or more cake?
HEARTBREAK VELOCITY is a darkly sweet and sweetly sexy show about diving into the downfalls of love, armed with only a Finnish dictionary and a dessert fork. And cake!
Preview Audiences have said:
"sophisticated, sensual, powerful", "nuanced, sublime", "divine, honest, passionate - REAL".
2015 Rogue Festival Audience Reviews
Barbara Ulman:
Mia Paschal is a talented, beautiful, graceful chameleon. Tightly crafted, passionate, personal, funny, and poetic, her show is amazing for its quick changes as it presents the varied experiences of a life.
Jaguar Bennett:
Mia Paschal is pure poetry in Heartbreak Velocity, an exquisite and fascinating spoken-word-and-movement piece about love, loss, spilling things, and the charming definitiveness of the Finnish language. This show is a delight for language lovers — Paschal glides between characters, voices, moods, English, French, Italian with graceful fluidity.
Annette Roman:
Mia Paschal’s Heartbreak Velocity: Spoken word poetry brought to life and woven in and out of story. Found myself hanging on every word to catch every nuance of this dreamlike journey through love and the experience of being a woman in a woman’s body. And what a gorgeous dress, so well suited to Mia’s dancer’s body!
Nate Butler:
Mia Paschal’s Heartbreak Velocity is mesmerizing. Mia spins a seemingly stream-of-consciousness monologue that is masterfully written and thoroughly captivating. Watching her performance was like being in a wonderful dream-state; I didn’t really want to wake up. Be prepared to be mesmerized.
E. Field:
…it is impossible to take your eyes off of Mia Paschal, in the bright light, in the half-light, the woman wears a red glow like no other… and red is not easy…
…her previous shows were astonishing… the range would go from near whisper to outbursts that, as you were riveted, at once, to her and your chair, you had no choice but to just breathe, barely.
There is the type of electrical current that pushes you away, and the type that locks your whole body, and then there is Mia.
…time, though she shows no sign of it’s effects, has passed…
she’s not been on stage, here, since 2008.
…genuine elegance remains through the entire performance a deep glow, despite, at times, excruciating reveals, her beauty and poise never lull, this is not a rollercoaster, this is not an assault, there is no amplification, -nor is it required.
…it is said, that yelling is for people who have nothing to say… she never yells, instead, she speaks clearly, with conviction conveying the most gorgeous layers.
…this is not story-telling, no mere document, she’s always been personal, she’s always told the truth.
This is the part of you, she’s lived, that you didn’t know you had, more honestly, the part of you that you never realized anyone else saw.
…you don’t ‘watch’ Mia…
you don’t just sit there,
you don’t just ‘participate,’
No, from the moment she walks into view, immaculately gowned, you are fully opened as she dances from place to place, a spirit leaving a body, a vapor that tendrils from confession to confession…
….Nor is this the ‘too much information’ that is so often passed as art…
No… she has always been genuine, and now she is subtle,
now she will become your every nuance, your moments of dear heat, the chill you felt, driving back home, across the bridge, the morning after, having reached for something you knew was going to leave you an empty shell, there you were, little more than wet cardboard, in the pale light, barely able to remain upright, hoping for time and the sun to restore some sort of integrity with the distance.
It’s Mia’s experiences, but it’s your life…
… a lithe magnificent being, in gown and satin gloves, graces, just out of reach, singing every member of the audience, held to her chest, unaware they were starving and shivering, joining in unison,
every effort,
some holding till your fingers grew tired and let go, most missing the bar by a mile,
falling, and calling it flight.
her voice
her body
in languages that dab and showers of sparks, showing that words mean nothing,
-but the effort… not to just try… but to step off, knowing it will not work…
moving toward, hungry for the closeness…
She never raises her voice
She simply opens, locks eyes with you, speaks your truths, enrobes you for nearly an hour,
-and then your legs are cold, again.
Fresno has one more chance to experience this rare performer, This upcoming Saturday at the only ‘Dianna’s’ Venue left (North.)
The show is HeartBreak Velocity. Saturday the 7th. 12:30.
